2010 SUMMER CAMP: GRADES PreK – 8

Enroll your child in the first camps to explore the new Giants of the Savanna! During June, July, and early August, the Dallas Zoo will offer single day and week-long summer camps for children entering PreK through 8th grade.

New this year we are offering multiple week-long camps for the same grade level, as well as discounts for siblings enrolled in camps. All multiple enrollments will receive 5% off of their total camp cost!

2010 DATES AND TOPICS

Please note that The Dallas Aquarium at Fair Park is currently closed for renovations. Due to this closure, we will not hold any of our summer camp days at the Aquarium.

 

SINGLE DAY CAMPS

FOR KIDS ENTERING PRE-K TO THIRD GRADE

Single Day Camps are offered from July 12th–14th for Prek-3rd graders. Topics include:

July 12– Elephant Attitudes K-1 Camp is Full, spaces open in PreK & 2nd-3rd

July 13– Giraffing Around K-1 Camp is Full, spaces open in PreK & 2nd-3rd

July 14– Predator Instincts K-1 Camp is Full, spaces open in PreK & 2nd-3rd

Students will be divided into grade appropriate classes (PreK, K-1 st, and 2nd-3rd). Classes run from 9:00-3:00PM.

Cost is $40 day for members ($45/non-members).

Before-care is available at a rate of $5/day for members ($6 for non-members). After-care is available for single day camps at a rate of $9/day for members ($10 for non-members)

 

WEEKLONG CAMPS

3-5 YEAR OLDS

"NO PLACE LIKE HOME - EXPLORING ANIMAL HABITATS"

For 3-5 year olds who are eligible for Preschool enrollment in the fall of 2010.

This camp focuses on animal habitats and nature outside the classroom!

You may enroll your child in a morning or afternoon session.

"DISCOVER AFRICA "

For 3-5 year olds who are eligible for Preschool enrollment in the fall of 2010.

“Discover Africa” provides children with an up close, immersive experience in our new Giants of the Savanna!

You may enroll your child in a morning or afternoon session.

K-1st GRADE

"ZOO SLEUTHS: SAVANNA MYSTERIES "

For children eligible for K-1st grade enrollment in the fall of 2010.

“Zoo Sleuths: Savanna Mysteries” takes children through fun-filled adventures as they try to decipher who the mystery animal is each day!

Week-long sessions run:

Cost is $194/week for members ($215 for non-members). “Zoo Sleuths: Savanna Mysteries” classes run from 9:00-3:00pm.

 

"LION TALES AND SAVANNA SONGS "

For children eligible for K-1st grade enrollment in the fall of 2010.

“Lion Tales and Savanna Songs” explores various folktales and stories about African animals.

Week-long sessions run:

"GLOBETREKKERS... AFRICA AND BEYOND "

For children eligible for 2nd -3rd grade enrollment in the fall of 2010.

“Globetrekkers… Africa and Beyond!” takes a trip around the world…and never leaves the zoo!

Week-long sessions run:

"PAWS AND PATTERNS ANIMAL ART CAMP "

“Paws and Patterns Animal Art Camp” explores the artistry of the natural world!

4th-5th GRADE

"ANIMAL ENRICHMENT CAMP "

For children eligible for 4th – 5th grade enrollment in the fall of 2010.

"Animal Enrichment Camp" will make fun items for our animals, and then get to see them in use! This popular camp is a hit with campers, zookeepers, and of course our animals!

"AFRICAN ART CAMP"

For children eligible for 4th – 5th grade enrollment in the fall of 2010.

“African Art Camp” learns about the rich artistic traditions of Africa; students will also learn techniques to make African inspired art to take home!

June 28– July 2

“African Art” classes run from 9:00-3:00pm.

 

"ENDANGERED GRASSLANDS "

For children eligible for 4th – 5th grade enrollment in the fall of 2010.

“Endangered Grasslands” at the Dallas Zoo and the Trinity River Audubon Center.

This new camp takes children from the world of the African savanna to our own Blackland Prairie, the most endangered ecosystem in the United States. Spend Monday through Wednesday at the Dallas Zoo, and then spend a fun-filled, action packed Thursday through Friday (including a staff supervised overnight) at the Trinity River Audubon Center. While Trinity River Audubon Center staff will supervise the Thursday overnight, parents are welcome to join in the fun!

This special, week-long session takes place July 12–16

Cost is $234 for members of the Dallas Zoo or the Trinity River Audubon Center ($260 for non-members).

6th-8th GRADE

"TOP PHOTOGRAPHER "

For children eligible for 6th – 8th grade enrollment in the fall of 2010

“Top Photographer” is a new camp for kids entering grades 6th through 8th. Participants will work in groups to learn the skills of wildlife photography while competing as groups in a fun, reality TV style competition to create an African Animal Photo Safari Journal to be published on the Dallas Zoo’s website. This camp also includes a staff supervised sleepover on the Thursday night. Students will be given dinner and breakfast the following morning. Participants must bring their own digital cameras for this camp!

"DESTINATION CONSERVATION: AFRICA"

For children eligible for 6th – 7th grade enrollment in the fall of 2010

“Destination Conservation: Africa” campers will learn about conservation issues in Africa, and here at home in Texas. Students will learn what can be done to help protected species and habitats, in addition to learning all about the animals that call the Savanna home.

"DALLAS ZOO 9-5: EXPLORING ZOO CAREERS "

For children eligible for 8th grade enrollment in the fall of 2010.

In “Dallas Zoo 9-5: Exploring Zoo Careers,” children will find out about all of the careers a zoo has to offer, and meet zoo professionals along the way!

“Dallas Zoo 9-5” runs from 9:00-3:00pm with a Dallas Zoo staff supervised sleep-over on Thursday night.

Cost is $239 for members ($265 for non-members).

 

GENERAL CAMP INFORMATION:

Beforecare is available from 8:00-9:00am for Summer Camp participants. The cost is $27/week for members ($30/non-members) and pre-registration is required.

Aftercare is available from 3:00-5:30pm for Summer Camp participants. The cost is $45/week for members ($50/non-members) and pre-registration is required.

Aftercare is not available for morning sessions of preschool; beforecare is not available for afternoon sessions of preschool.

 

JUNIOR CAMP COUNSELOR PROGRAM

Are you a high school student between the ages of 14-18?  Do you love the zoo and like working with kids?  We’re looking for Junior Camp Counselors (JCCs) for our 2009 Summer Camp Season to assist our lead teachers.  If you are interested, please contact the Zoo’s education department at 214.670.6832 or email education@dallaszoo.com for more information and to request an application form. We are no longer accepting applications for our 2010 camp season.

 

Please note: The Dallas Zoo reserves the right to cancel any program for reasons we deem appropriate. Individuals will be contacted directly and a full refund will be processed. You will be notified within 5 working days of receipt of your registration if the camp you registered for is full.

If your child is unable to attend a camp, a full refund (less a $35 processing fee) will be made if the Dallas Zoo is notified in writing 14 days or more prior to the start of your camp. No refund will be made for cancellations that occur within 13 days of the camp's start date.
